The City of Fort Myers Solid Waste Division is now offering roll-off services for all open-top and compactor containers. Open-top containers can be used for all construction/demolition projects, yard/land clean-up, and any other solid waste disposal needs. The Solid Waste Division services all open-top and compactors ranging from 10 cubic yards to 40 cubic yards.
Yard waste collection is part of your residential service. Yard waste includes all of the green growing debris you dispose of such as grass clippings, leaves, branches, trimmings, palm fronds, pine needles and fallen fruit. These items are recyclable and must be collected separate from other waste for proper recycling.
You may pile larger pieces like branches and palm fronds no more than four feet from the edge of the pavement. By City Ordinance, the pieces should be no longer than four feet in length and no larger than four inches in diameter (except palm fronds). Yard waste is collected once per week. The City collects piles ten cubic yards or less in size as part of your weekly service. Larger piles are assessed an additional fee. Small items like leaves, grass clippings or pine needles should be bagged so that they don't blow around and scatter. It is preferred that you use a recyclable bag for this purpose. Please separate yard waste from other waste that is set out for disposal. Please do not include landscaping wood or stone or any other material with your horticultural debris. Please do not put this material out more than 24 hours in advance of the scheduled collection date. Should there be a problem with the collection of your horticultural debris, the driver will leave a tag hanging on the doorknob acknowledging the problem. If your yard waste is not collected, please check for a door knob tag. If you do not receive a door hanger, please call our office at (239) 321-8050.
The Solid Waste Division delivers all collected horticultural debris to Lee County's Horticulture Recycling and Reduction Facility. Here the debris is chipped for mulch and is further treated for compost. It is important to keep your yard waste clear of other waste such as furniture and appliances.
The Solid Waste Division will collect dead domestic animals from City right-of-ways. Employees are not allowed on private property, such as front or back yards, parking lots, etc. Dead animals on State or County roads will be collected by the Department of Transportation (State or County depending on the location). We will make every attempt to pick up dead animals on the same day that the animal is reported to us.
Each year, many unsuspecting refuse workers are injured by hazardous waste disposed of incorrectly. The Lee County Department of Solid Waste sponsors several Household Hazardous Waste Collection days throughout the year. Many of these products are poisonous and can be harmful or fatal if swallowed. If you have any of the following materials in your home, garage or shed, please bring them to the next collection so they can be recycled or disposed of properly. These products will not be picked up with your regular trash collection.
Hazardous Materials:
Any item not listed above that is marked corrosive, flammable, toxic or reactive is also considered hazardous waste.
No business waste will be accepted. This program is for household hazardous waste only. Do not bring empty containers. They may be placed with your regular garbage.
