Mission Statement: "To ensure courteous, consistent, dependable and trustworthy public service through quality management oversight of the Community Development Department in a stimulating work environment with the tools necessary to efficiently and effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of the department."

The Community Development Department serves thousands of citizens each year with a wide range of services associated with permitting, plan review, inspections, code enforcement, zoning, land use planning, affordable housing, historic preservation, business tax, garage sale permits and much more, for properties located within the city limits of Fort Myers.  Our mission, through the services we provide, is to promote public health and safety, help maintain a healthy environment, promote a strong local economy, and provide courteous, timely, and efficient service to the public.

The Community Development Department is comprised of the following Divisions:

Administration Division
  • Oversight of entire Department operations
  • Fiscal management and budget oversight
  • GIS mapping
  • Statistical reporting
  • Customer service, cashiering and cash handling
  • Administrative duties related to Office of the Director

Important Notice

The 2010 Edition of the Florida Fire Prevention Code (NFPA) has been adopted by the State and became effective in all jurisdictions on January 1, 2012.

The 2010 Edition of the Florida Building Code (FBC) has also been adopted by the State and is effective in all jurisdictions on March 15, 2012.

Therefore, ALL permit applications submitted on or after the effective dates reflected above, are subject to compliance with the aforementioned Code Editions.
